Anywhere you walk in New York, there is a story about the place and the location that you're standing in and the history probably dates back to a time when you weren't yet alive . Its those stories that I find interesting and its those stories that attract me back to New York City -- you may or may not have watched The Gangs of New York, but the movie essentially gives you a glimpse of what life was like and what type of criminal / gang activity ensued in the lower part of Manhattan (or around Five Points) , which ironically is now Foley Square (surrounded by civic buildings like United States Court House, The New York County Supreme Court , etc on Center Street) -- but, what about the other areas of New York City that have not been mentioned in a movie by Martin Scorsese? Well, hopefully, through time, I will develop more stories about New York and will share them with you here.
As I learn more about the city that I've inhabited for more than nine years, and fell in love with, you will learn to love this city too. Afterall, New York City is a place where movies are made, and where magic happens (um, taken away from Hollywood) ... If you recall, it was in An Affair to Remember that Terry McKay (aka Deborah Kerr) said -- "The Empire State Building is the closest thing to heaven in this city" -- well come and claim your piece of heaven and WELCOME TO NEW YORK!
The photo above is a picture of Lower Manhattan on a rainy, gloomy day. I took this shot as I was traveling back from an Art Show on Governors Island (another blog posting to come in the future). Another irony is that I out of the blue thought of doing this type of series today, on September 11, 2009 -- well, its all about a Day of Remembrance! -- btw, its raining in NYC today -- talk about a true depiction of the day ... eery, isn't it!
